I love that feeling of being organised and getting things done – my days run smoother and I generally feel happier! I am in control of my day rather than my day being in control of me. There are many things you can do to be more organised, but I have picked out my 10 favourites. You don’t have to try them all at once – start by giving one thing a go then another and another, and before you know it, you will feel like you are in control of each and every day. So here are my 10 top picks……
It’s the very first task you can do in the morning. By doing this you are showing yourself self-respect and love and no matter how hard a day you might have had, you will come home to a bed that you made. Check out the blog post “If you want to change the world start by making your bed.”
2: Never leave dishes in the sink
There is nothing worse than getting up or coming home to dirty dishes in the sink! As soon as the meal is over, get stuck into washing dishes or putting them in the dishwasher and get the family on board to help.
3: Deal with emails and mail every day
Open emails and mail every day. If you are unable to action them straight away, schedule in a time in your diary to do so. Setting up regular weekly schedules to action your mail will make your life easier!
4: Schedule in everything
Appointments, school pick ups, exercise, play dates, time out – whatever needs to happen in your day, schedule it in. You may want to use a diary, a device or a whiteboard – either way, use whatever will work the best for you.
Don’t let it build up! Doing small loads every day will stop this happening and will make your weekends more enjoyable as you won’t have a mountain of washing to deal with from the week.
6: Finish tasks
It’s simple. If you start a task, finish it, before moving on to something else. By scheduling in the task at a time that will work for you, you are more likely to get it done. Trying to squeeze it in when you you have not allowed the right amount of time to do so, means that you may not finish the task. That then opens up the possibility of it never getting done and potentially leaves clutter lying around.
7: Put things back in their place after they have used them
“A Place For Everything And Everything In Its Place.” Once you have used an item, put it back in it’s place. If you don’t have a place for it, create one. Adopt the “One Touch Rule” and watch the difference it will make to your life!
8: Make a to do list the night before
I love my “To Do” lists! I use the “Teux Deux” app, where if for some reason a task does not get done that day, it immediately carries it over to the next day and the next and the next, until it gets done!
9: Tidy up at the end of every night
I LOVE waking up to a tidy home every morning! By having a tidy up at the end of every day, it sets the tone for the day ahead and you are able to make a fresh start to the day, rather than having to deal with the “Stuff” from yesterday.
10: Declutter on a regular basis
I cannot stress this enough. The more often you declutter and review your stuff, the easier it is to let things go and keep on top of your clutter. Only keep those items which you love and use and you will see what is really important in your life.
As always I love to hear your feedback! Which one task worked the best for you? Did you come up with some organising strategies of your own? Happy organising 🙂

No wonder I have a tidy home I do everything on you list in some way. I even give my home a good clean before heading on holiday as no way would I want to come home to a messy home. I’m lucky I have a hubby who helps around the house. Never leave the house without making the bed and dishes as it makes the home look so much cleaner and tidier.
Awesome Gael! There are so many benefits to being organised both physically and mentally – I couldn’t live any other way 🙂
Great ideas, here, Natalie! I’d like to share the TeuxDeux app on the #MyToDoListNZ Facebook page!
Go for it! I couldn’t live without it, it’s a great little app! 🙂
I virtually do everything on this list. It feels rewarding to know that i am naturally an organizer and there are people like me. Whhooo. Thank you
