I recently had the pleasure of chatting with the lovely Tina Stephen from ROOMIE – an online interior design service, which is quick, affordable and fun! After ten years of experience in the design industry, she really knows her stuff. Tina is truly passionate about what she does and is down to earth. Look no further if you love design and are a little stuck for ideas – she will come in very handy once your space is decluttered and organised.

Here’s what she had to say……

What do you love the most about what you do?

The variety and flexibility of owning and running my own business, as well as the variety of style aesthetics of each new client.

Can you describe a typical “Roomie” day?

Each day is anything but typical, a day at Roomie HQ  may include sourcing furniture and homewares for a client project, working on designs in CAD and photoshop, blogging about NZ design, writing about interior design topics for NZ publications, catching up on Social Media, meeting with other NZ creatives. I also do regular lighting design for individual clients (Roomie Light) and other businesses.  On top of this is the day to day running of a business which includes admin, accounts and marketing.

What makes you the best person for your profession?

Coming from a commercial design career to starting my own design consultancy I have a grounding in spatial design, lighting design and interior design which allows me to understand a clients needs and how this translates into a warm, comfortable and inviting home.

How do you keep current with new trends?

I spend a large part of my day sourcing furniture and homewares for clients, and I constantly attend homeware launches for new product. Local and overseas companies as well as blogs and magazines are a great source of inspiration too.

How important is it to be organised in your business?

Keeping files, emails and accounts streamlined and organised is essential to being fast and reponsive to clients and working on Design kits. Having all the information ready at your fingertips means the time spent designing a clients project is well focused.

Who or what inspires you?

Everyday things – walking in my neighbourhood parks, cooking a great meal, as well as new adventures in far off places – I love to travel. Since starting Roomie I have been super inspired by the amazing local creatives we have in NZ – all doing what they love and making it work around (often) full time jobs and families.

Describe the sights and sounds of your home.

I live on the fringe of the Waitakere Ranges so the Tuis are often fighting and singing in the trees. And I always have Base FM streaming when I work at home.
