I have always said that the reason I keep my home organised, is so that I am able to do the things I want to do without being distracted by clutter or having to tidy up first. The world can be a stressful place! So the last thing we need is to feel stressed at home too. Here are 8 things you can do to create a feeling of calm in your home which will make a big difference to your overall health and well being.
1: Don’t let the clutter in your door
This is a big one! You need to think consciously about how the clutter is coming into your home and potentially start making different choices moving forward.
2: Have things in your home that you love and access regularly
Take a look around your home. Like what you see? Are there items that you no longer love? As life changes, so do we. So it’s important that the things we have in our home reflect who we are and make us feel good.
3: Create functional homes for your items
One of the big causes of clutter is often that items don’t have a home. Taking the time to create functional homes for them will make your life so much easier.
4: One touch rule
An oldie but a goodie! The rule is: put away your things immediately and avoid handling them more than once after you’re done with them. That’s it.
5: Permanent donation bin
Having a permanent donation bin in a visible place where everyone in your home can see it, means that once an item is no longer needed, it can be popped into the bin. Once it is full, put it in your car and take it to a charity of your choice.
6: Make your bed
A made bed brings a sense of order and calm, even if your room is not in perfect order. Here is a blog I wrote in detail about the benefits of making your bed every day.
7: Shut the doors on messy rooms
This one is an instant quick fix! Clutter is distracting and causes anxiety and stress. So if you have a messy teenager or family member, simply shutting the door on their room brings an instant sense of calm.
8: Declutter regularly
If we don’t declutter, we can end up with too much stuff. I recommend decluttering quarterly, when the seasons change. Keeping on top of it keeps everything in check and helps you to feel in control.

I’ll leave you with an inspirational quote I just love…
“The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave and it feels even better to come back.”
